Office Dog Games Renames L5R Board Game 'Gunsen' at GAMA Expo 2026
The GAMA Expo 2026 has delivered exciting updates for tabletop enthusiasts, specifically regarding the upcoming Legend of the Five Rings experience from Office Dog Games. During the event, the publisher clarified that their newly developed board game has undergone a significant rebranding. Originally unveiled to the public during Gen Con 2026 under the title Tessen: The Battle for Toshi Ranbo, the project is now officially named Gunsen: The Battle For Toshi Ranbo. This strategic title is scheduled to hit retail shelves on August 28, 2026, bringing a fresh conflict to the beloved Rokugan setting. Designed by the collaborative team of Ben Rosset and Matthew O'Malley, Gunsen invites participants to engage in an epic struggle for dominance across the land. The gameplay structure combines area control mechanics with tableau-building elements, requiring participants to construct efficient layouts that generate powerful synergies. These strategic combinations are essential for outmaneuvering opponents while commanding armies from one of the seven Great Clans, including the Crab, Crane, Dragon, Lion, Phoenix, Scorpion, or Unicorn. Victory is not achieved merely through destruction, but by being the first commander to complete seven specific victory objectives. Accessibility and pacing are key features of this new release, making it suitable for a wide range of gaming groups. The box supports anywhere from two to six players, allowing for both intimate duels and large clan wars. Sessions are designed to be concise, with an estimated playtime of around 45 minutes, though the complexity suggests a recommended age of 14 and up. When it launches later this year, Gunsen will carry a retail price of $69.99. This announcement adds another highlight to the bustling GAMA Expo 2026 lineup, promising fans a streamlined yet deep dive into the feudal fantasy world of L5R.
